Easter!

Easter is an important annual religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. In Christian belief, Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion. Many Christian denominations celebrate this resurrection on Easter Day or Easter Sunday (also Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday), two days after Good Friday. The chronology of his death and resurrection is variously interperated to be between 26 and 36 AD.

The Easter Bunny is a mythical character depicted as an anthropomorphic rabbit. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter. The Easter Bunny will either put the baskets in a designated place or hide them somewhere in the house for the children to find when they wake up in the morning.
The Easter Bunny is very similar in trait to its Christmas holiday counterpart, Santa Claus, as they both bring gifts to good children on the night before their respective holiday. Its origin is disputed but the character was mentioned as early as 1600; some trace it to alleged pre-Christian fertility lore, others to the role of the hare in Christian iconography.

Easter Sunday celebrations for the year 2009 fall on 12th April.

International Friendship Day

Today's school assembly is about 'International Friendship Day'. International Friendship Day is a day to help students learn about and appreciate other cultures and to also nurture in them the spirit of friendship and collaboration among different people. This year's International Friendship Day falls on 17 April, Friday. The theme for International Friendship Day 2009 is 'Getting to know ASEAN' where students will get to learn and appreciate cultures in ASEAN countries and understand the importance of good bilateral relations with our neighbours.

They invited a drama group to illustrate how the foreign students might feel when they are in Singapore. Some of them might miss their home while others felt isolated. They are lonely and does not have much friends. Unfortunately, some are discriminated by others and no one wants to get near them. However, with people of different race and religion come together, a happy ending will arise.

April Fool's Day

April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day, although not a holiday in its own right, is a notable day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbours, or sending them on fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, the jokes only last until noon: like UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa, someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool". Elsewhere, such as in Ireland, France, and the USA, the jokes last all day.

The history of April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (new year's week) to January 1.

Communication traveled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1. These people were labeled "fools" by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on "fool errands," sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a "poisson d'avril" or "April fish" because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke.

This harassment evolved over time and a custom of prank-playing continue on the first day of April. This tradition eventually spread elsewhere like to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread to other countries, April Fool's Day has taken on an international flavor with each country celebrating the holiday in its own way.

In Scotland, for instance, April Fool's Day is devoted to spoofs involving the buttocks and as such is called Taily Day. The butts of these jokes are known as April 'Gowk', another name for cuckoo bird. The origins of the "Kick Me" sign can be traced back to the Scottish observance.

In England, jokes are played only in the morning. Fools are called 'gobs' or 'gobby' and the victim of a joke is called a 'noodle.' It was considered back luck to play a practical joke on someone after noon.

In Rome, the holiday is known as Festival of Hilaria, celebrating the resurrection of the god Attis, is on March 25 and is also referred to as "Roman Laughing Day."

In Portugal, April Fool's Day falls on the Sunday and Monday before lent. In this celebration, many people throw flour at their friends.

The Huli Festival is celebrated on March 31 in India. People play jokes on one another and smear colors on one another celebrating the arrival of Spring.

So, no matter where you happen to be in the world on April 1, don't be surprised if April fools fall playfully upon you.

First Time In My Life

Its a normal Monday morning when I followed my usual routine to school. I had my breakfast and took the usual feeder bus to school.

When I reached the school, I placed my schoolbag at the bench where I will normally sit. "Hey, good news! Come!" From my seat, I could hear his call loud and clear. When I turned my head over, I could see it was Xavier. In my mind, I wondered what was the piece of good news? Is it chinese teacher not around? That was what I really thought of at that moment. When I approached him, he asked wheather if I am able to do the job as a flag raiser. I hesitated as I did not know if I am able to perform. My answer to him was "Erm... Maybe?" And he took it as a "Yes" as the answer. He also told me that he will sms me the time and date for the day that I need to raise the flag.

I went back to my seat to pack my bag and take out my tie. As I am packing and sorting everything neatly, I heard him call out again. When I went up to him, he wanted me to be the flag raiser today! I stood rooted to the ground when I recieved the piece of information. I did not have any mental preparation yet. That was the first time of my life!!! I could imagine many possible mistakes I would made, such as pulling the wrong string of the pulley, flag dropped on the floor and the speed of the raising of flag is eitehr too fast or too slow.

When everything is settled and I am supposed to raise the flag, Xavier and Jeremy taught me the procedure of the whole flag rasing process. They even told me the number of steps I should take before coming to a halt in front of the flag that I am going to raise, which is the school flag. As I am hearing all the instructions, I could feel my legs shivering a little. I am nervous. The more information I recieved, the more nervous I would become. After all the instructions were given, we took our position and practised once through the process to get ourselves prepared.

Soon after, the chime, which is the school bell, had gone off. It was time to assembly at the parade square. We took our position at the back of the flag poles, 8-steps behind, waiting for the whole school to settle down. When the school settled down, Ms Angie Goh place the mike at the mike stand. That was the signal for us to start. We marched up the stage and towards our flags.

"Sekolah...Sedia!" The commander had already shouted his command when I am still untying the string that secure the school flag. My mind was in a total chaos. I panicked. When the national anthem was being played, I decided to forget what happen and left the string half-untied. I looked to what was in front of me and started to sing the national anthem. I felt uncomfortable as there seems to be many eyes staring at me. However, the real fact is that they are staring at the national flag which is being raised slowly as the anthem is being played.

"Let's take our pledge together...ready begin." After the pledge taking, I immediately tried to untie all string, before the school song is being played. "To you Bowen we come...." I took a deep breath and slowly raised the flag up. My hands was a little shivery and I was extremely nervous. As the school flag was being raised, I felt more and more at ease as my job would be completed soon.

" Sekolah... Senang Diri!" The commander gave the command to stand at ease. Finally, everything was over! I felt I had a stone being lifted off my shoulders. I felt totally relieved. After the parade, I found out from the commander that he actually made a mistake. He was too fast in saying the command of standing at attention and forgot to give us time to untie. I could understand his nervousness as I felt the same when we were on the stage.

This flag raising experience was a brand new experience that I never had before. Perhaps if I had another chance, I might want to experience that again. Then that would be known as "Second Time In My Life".

Lyrics for song : Pokemon-You can do it

In the morning when you wake up
Open your eyes to a new day
Look around at the gifts you've got
You've been so lucky along the way

Time to finish what you've begun
Have the faith, you're the one
Throw your hat high-up to the sun

Now that you face the greatest test
Use the lessons that you've learned
You're goal is to be the best
And claim the prize that you've earned

Ever since you were a young man
You've kept your eye on the master plan
To reach for the top- and touch the sky

It's your destiny

To spread your wings and fly

You can do it if you really try
You can do it if you really try
Spread your wings and learn to fly
You can do it if you really, really try

Keep movin' forward to stay alive
Trust your heart and you'll survive
Follow your dreams, never let them die

It's your destiny
To spread your wings and fly

Why I choose this song?
From the first stanza, "In the morning when you wake up, open your eyes to a new day" This means that when are awake from your sleep, its another new day for you. "Look around at the gifts you've got. You've been so lucky along the way" From this sentence, it tells me that you look around your room and see your achievements hung up on the walls and placed on shelves. For year twos and above, it can refer to the badges and awards you earned. It also mentioned that you are very lucky.

From the second stanza, "Time to finish what you've begun." It can refers to you completion of you March Training Camp (MTC) that you participate in during the march holidays. It is time to officially ends the whole process. "Have the faith, you're the one." You must believe in yourself that you are the one who completes the training camp, and not anyone else who had helped you. "Throw your hat high-up to the sun" This literally means that you throw you hat into the sky like the graduates throwing their square hat into the sky after graduating. It marks the end of your training and its time for celebration.

From the third stanza, "Now that you face the greatest test, use the lessons that you've learned." In this line, it can refer to two things. Firstly, the "greatest test" can mean the MTC. During MTC, you need to apply your drill knowledge and some theory work in order to proceed smoothly with the whole company. Secondly, the "greatest test" can mean tomorrow's POP. It is a very big test for everyone as you need to know how to perform well and how to recieve your gifts. People who are perfoming needs a lot of courage in order to stand in front of the parents and present your item. For the year ones, they had to recall what is being taught during their drill session and apply it accordingly into their drill display item. For the year threes, we had to know what is taught during Physical Training (PT) sessions. "You're goal is to be the best, and claim the prize that you've earned" We must try our very best and be the best that you can be. Our aim is to make the whole ceremony a great success and be the best that it ever can be. After showing what you have got, its time to be rewarded. You shall claim your prize that you had earned. For the year ones, it is target badge. For the year twos and above, it is awards and promotions.

From the fourth stanza, "Ever since you were a young man, you've kept your eye on the master plan." This is mostly refering to the senior NCOs for the company. Since secondary one when you are still new to the company, you will be asked to aim for the master badge, the "Founders' Badge". "To reach for the top- and touch the sky" We must work towards our dream and strive for excellence.

"You can do it if you really try, you can do it if you really try. Spread your wings and learn to fly, you can do it if you really, really try." This whole line means that you will be able to complete what is being asked from you if you give in you best. For example, during the MTC, when you are asked to complete something during a time limit. You can only complete it if you put in all your best and never give up. Everything is possible if you have the will to complete it.

Therefore, I chose this song...
